SOLVED:

it turns out that even though portage reportede that libxml was installed, it
had infact failed to install (for whatever reason).

However, since portage reported that libxml was installed, I assumed that there
was some other error involved.


Redoing a manual merge of libxml succeeded and, redoing emerge gnome-print
succeeded too.
