Description Peter Hyman 2005-08-09 07:16:40 UTC
these tools are now embedded in the tarball for vmware-workstation-5.0.0-x. the
download location specified for tools tarball does not exist anymore. Only after
installing a client can the tools be installed through the vmware screen. This
ebuild is now obsolete.

The following is from the vmware-linux-tools-5.0.0.ebuild

# the vmware-tools sources are part of the vmware virtual machine;
# they must be installed by hand
MY_PN="VMwareTools-5.0.0-13124"
SRC_URI="http://www.vmware.com/${MY_PN}.tar.gz"

pkg_postinst ()
{
        einfo "To start using the vmware-tools, please run the following:"
        einfo
        einfo "  /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl"
        einfo "  rc-update add vmware-linux-tools default"
        einfo "  /etc/init.d/vmware-linux-tools start"
        einfo
        einfo "Please report all bugs to http://bugs.gentoo.org/"
}

the url is inaccurate, and the above tools don't exist anymore.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge vmware-linux-tools
2. try and download tarball as instructed
3.

Actual Results:
can't do/can't do!

Expected Results:
I think this ebuild is obsolete and should be removed

Must install a guest os and THEN install tools through the VM menu. There is no
separate download

I disagree. This ebuild is NOT obsolete. It is true that the package is no
longer available for download, however once you have the vm client up and
running, selecing VM >> Install VMware Tools and then mounting /dev/hdc gets
your the vmware-tools tarball. Simply move the file to the distfiles folder and
run the ebuild. So I suggest rather than getting rid of this ebuild, it should
be modified so that if the file does not exist in /usr/portage/distfiles folder,
the user should be provided with instructions on how to get the tarball.

By the way this ebuild does not work (5.0 version). That issue is covered in a
different bug (88307).
Comment 2 Peter Hyman 2006-03-14 09:29:02 UTC
closing due to lack of activity
Comment 3 Peter Hyman 2006-03-14 09:29:34 UTC
closing because it's mine and nothing's been going on with it forever.
Comment 4 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-08 06:19:00 UTC
We close bugs on this end. Anyway, the "maintainer" for this package hasn't worked on any of his bugs regarding this package for over a year. Because of this, the Gentoo VMware team have now reclaimed the package. Expect to see some actual motion on the bugs related to it.
Comment 5 Peter Hyman 2006-05-08 06:37:52 UTC
I have a lot of knowledge and experience w/VMW.Let me know if I can help from a QA/UA perspective, or with future ebuilds.
Comment 6 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-15 15:31:54 UTC
We removed this ebuild completely in favor of the 5.5.x ebuilds, since it is a free upgrade for anyone on the 5.x series.
