I've been running mysql-4.1.x for a while now, unmasked. It works fine, but this
isn't a bug about mysql. The php5-sapi-r2 eclass depends on mysql-4.0* for
reasons I haven't been able to ascertain. Simply changing the dep from
mysql-4.0* to mysql or even mysql-4* would let mysql-4.1.x users build PHP
without major headaches like I've been having.

Extra-trivial patch to demonstrate what I mean:
