By default, dialog detects gpm, when it should be patched to support --with-gpm (or --enable-gpm) and be made to use the gpm USE flag. This causes issues for releases, because not every machine uses gpm, but gpm is on all release media. This causes dialog to link against it, and to look for /dev/gpmctl, which only exists once gpm has been started. Allowing dialog to not link against gpm would resolve this, and make net-setup usable on a machine without a mouse, and therefore gpm. Thanks,

Are you sure that this really is a bug? dialog does not link directly against gpm. It links against gpm only via ncurses, and ncurses respects the gpm USE flag.
Yes, I am sure it is a bug, since, as I said, dialog links against gpm if it finds it.
Sorry Chris I am planning of fixing this. I did start at one stage. If someone else whats to beat me to a solution thats fine with me too.
dialog is checking for gpm just in case ncurses requires it.
During bugday multiple people on IRC have been unable to reproduce it. Maybe it is fixed in new versions? Closing for now, reopen if it happens again.
