Regarding dependencies: the libraries "commons-logging" and "commons-httpclient" are not needed for either running or building jabref. They are no longer bundled in the JabRef jar distributed from SourceForge. So unless the build process under Portage is different in ways that change the dependencies, these could be removed from the list.

Of course I could wait. I did the release myself, and find it practical to take
care of the notification stuff after finishing. Could you elaborate on what you
mean? I'm not quite sure what to make of it.

Final 1.8 release out, so I'm closing this one with "INVALID" status. New bug
filed for 1.8.
