Sorry, forgot to mention that I did *not* yet install the new kernel! You ran etc-update to update the configuration files? Had you pam_console as a required module for auth services? No. I chroot'ed the partition from live CD and ran etc-update just now but it tells me to have nothing to do. pam_module: as I don't completely understand the question I think "no" is the correct answer :) Can you attach /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/system-auth ? There is no "system-auth" only this one.
