Description Timo Nentwig 2005-07-12 10:33:01 UTC
I did a emerge -u world yesterday which updated a lot. Among others the kernel
to 2.6.12 AFAIR. Well, system still boots but I cannot login. After typing
user name/root I get a "Login incorrect" without being prompted for password
at all.

I don't remember all the packages updated. If necessary I'll try to boot from
CD and chroot in order to find out...

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

2.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I did *not* yet install the new kernel!
Comment 2 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-12 10:54:51 UTC
You ran etc-update to update the configuration files?
Had you pam_console as a required module for auth services?

Comment 3 Timo Nentwig 2005-07-12 12:06:11 UTC
No. I chroot'ed the partition from live CD and ran etc-update just now but it
tells me to have nothing to do.

pam_module: as I don't completely understand the question I think "no" is the
correct answer :)

Can you attach /etc/pam.d/login and /etc/pam.d/system-auth ?

/etc/pam.d/system-auth-1.1

There is no "system-auth" only this one.
Comment 7 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-12 12:32:10 UTC
*That* is the problem.
Create system-auth file to be able to login again.

Then please paste emerge info.
Comment 8 Diego Elio Pettenò (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-07-12 12:32:17 UTC
*That* is the problem.
Create system-auth (copying the -1.1) file to be able to login again.

Then please paste emerge info.

You don't have /etc in CONFIG_PROTECT.. please make sure your profile is sane.

As stated.
