In /etc/sane.d/dll.conf mustek_pp is listed but the file mustek_pp.conf is 
missing.

Bad news - my dev box is in another city and powered off. The guy who could turn
it on does not respond (holidays?), so I can't do much about this right now.

Good news: Got access to my box.
Bad news: Can't reproduce your problem. Which sane-backends version are you
using? Where's your "emerge info" output?
Are you by chance using amd64 and a version < 1.0.15-r2? If yes, please try this
version.
