Expected Results:  
I expect a clean compile and running software.  We are starting some businesses
and need a good account package.

This happens on multiple computers, all running different versions of Gentoo,
both 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.  I did an "emerge sync" prior to "emerge gnucash" or
"emerge oaf".

i had same problem, actualy the first error is at the begining of the compile:

/usr/bin/orbit-idl -I../idl --define=GNOME_FACTORY_COMPILATION
../idl/oaf-factory.idl
Error: Empty file 

as explained on the forum.
The orbit package was installed from a tbz2 of 2005.1 packages for pentium3  
rebuilding only the package gnome-base/orbit-0.5.17 from source fixed the
problem ...
mutch beter than the --emptytree oaf ;)
