Bug 96777

Summary: Handbook on Universal Install CD gives bad file name for kernel config 2.6
Product: [OLD] Docs-user Reporter: James Armstrong <James_Armstrong>
Component: Gentoo Linux x86 Installation GuideAssignee: Docs Team <docs-team>
Status: RESOLVED CANTFIX
Severity: normal
Priority: High
Version: unspecified
Hardware: x86
OS: Linux
Whiteboard:
Package list:
Runtime testing required: ---

Description James Armstrong 2005-06-22 05:10:19 UTC
In the handbook on the Universal Install CD 2005.0 the line: "# zcat
/proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6 " does not include
the "-config" as it does in the on-line version.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot Install CD
2. Look at handbook.

Actual Results:
The line reads :
# zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-2.6

Expected Results:
The line should read :
# zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/share/genkernel/x86/kernel-config-2.6

The build / install worked anyway because the file somehow existed anyway

genkernel works with either...

You are *creating* the file when you redirect the output, so there's nothing
incorrect in the Handbook.

Also, bugs in the Handbook go to the docs-team, and actually have nothing to do
with the LiveCD itself.
Comment 2 James Armstrong 2005-06-30 18:48:30 UTC
No, it IS an error because the next install step prints out a status message
saying that it is taking its input from the correct file name. Also, I've
noticed that the on-line version of the handbook has the correct file name.
So the Live CD is in fact in error.

Well excuse me, then. No need to get snippy about it.

Anyway, I'm assigning this to the docs team.

We can't fix documentation that is hard-burned on the installation CDs...
