On trying to emerge xfree-4.2.1 i get the following error message

!!! ERROR: The ebuild did not complete successfully.
!!! Function src_unpack, Line 101, Exitcode 1
!!! Failed Patch: 001_all_4.2.0-G450.patch.bz2!

because of this is cannot complete emerge -up world

Nuke /usr/portage/* (remember to backup /usr/portage/distfiles), rsync and
try again.

I'm actaully using the tar.bz2 portage tree as i'm behind a firewall. Can I 
remove everything in /usr/portage successfully?
