The attached source patch (which needs to be applied in src_unpack() and that autoreconf / libtoolize is run) makes malloc.h presence non-ensured so that it works fine on Gentoo/FreeBSD (where malloc.h is just an #error saying to avoid using it).

0.5.7 is out and should fix everything.
