Before the 0.27.0 release, enlightenment took over basic acpi events (link:

)

It seems to work locally, by removing the acpid dep from the ebuild (lid close results in the expected suspend event).  If it inspires confidence, the E author maintains the arch build, and removed the dep there :-)
