And no app reads .pdf.gz files (at least not kpdf, anyway). Shouldn't we need 
a "dodocNotGzipped" macro (with a better name, however :-), since we don't use mixed case names)?

Currently, the only stuff that doesnt get gzip'd is html stuff.  There's nothing
preventing you from redirecting the output of gunzip to a pdf file.
