I've noticed several packages that i believe are not needed in the basic for 
instance:

ftp
setserial
ed
cpio
fbset-2.1

I feel that these can be added later if 
they are wanted. I'm sure there are more, perl ?

by basic what do you mean, stage3 ?

No... I'm pretty sure that ftp is important to a source distro.
SetSerial is important for SLIP and external modems.
ed is just a text editor... Is it really that big to complain about?
cpio is backup and special file work.
fbset might be important to people using fb exclusively.

None of those are big.
If you still have objections, reopen this bug with them.
