This seems to have started to cause build failures with the switch to 23.0 profiles.

I can confirm that with <23.0 profile I could emerge media-libs/xvid-1.3.7-r1 without issue. Now after switching to default/linux/amd64/23.0/split-usr I see this issue.

Sorry, I have to correct myself here. I did 


emerge --emptytree @world

after switching profile and I did not see this issue. Sorry for the noise.

    media-libs/xvid: disable assembly
    
    There's a handful of very old asm impls in here for mmx+sse2 but they're
    non-PIC and unlikely to be worth it these days.
