Can't reproduce. As far as I can tell, bibtex8 returns with an exit status of 1, as expected by the test, but fails to produce the right output.

I think we should ask upstream for input.

I just hit this while trying to build bibtexu for the first time on a new machine (since it's an undeclared test-dep of dev-tex/rubber, as I mentioned in bug #928967 comment 3), then when I built it with tests disabled and then tried rebuilding it with them re-enabled, the test passed. Maybe part of the results of the test depends on the previously-installed package in /, rather than the package currently being built?
