Following the upgrade to gnome 2.10, the mail check applet has disappeared (as per gnome 2.10 release notes).

The release notes for 2.10 refer people who want the functionality back to
http://www.nongnu.org/mailnotify/

As far as I can see, this (a) doesn't currently exist in portage;
and, (b) looks like it might be useful (though I hope it has a non-popup mode too).

Any chance of it being added to portage?

This already is in portage as mail-client/mail-notification
