This will allow choice between net-misc/wget net-misc/wget2.

Or this might sound crazy but merge both and put them into (sub)slots

If this ends up being done, it may as well be app-alternatives/wget (no eselect needed).

Not that I really looked at wget2 much myself, so not much else to say. Does seem mostly compatible.
