I recommend not setting USE on the command line, as it only works temporarily, and it overrides everything in package.use.
Please run: grep -rsin python /etc/portage and purge any stale python_* entries.

Created attachment 865510 [details] emerge --info text and zz-autounmask file I am trying to install hplip using the command USE="positioning jpeg2k doc gd corefonts -test -python_targets_python3_10" emerge --ask hplip As you can see I needed make on the fly changes to USE string. Every time I run the line I get the message: config file '/etc/portage/package.use/zz-autounmask' needs updating. I run "etc-update" and use the '-3' selection which makes the update. But the nest time emerge command again, I again get the update etc message I have attached the info and the contents the zz-autounmask file. I have done the install on previous with on install. But "My dog ate my notes" in actuality. Please review an tell me what rabbit hole I should get out of!!
