Please specify checkpoints in the manual where the user can stop and later on continue from where s/he stopped. i.e. stage1 to stage2 and stage2 to stage3.  Maybe you could list the steps which need to be performed b4 the user can go on from that point onwards.

Also maybe you explain the option emerge --resume so that the user will not have to restart from the beginning if something goes wrong.

IMHO doing so will only make the Handbook even less readable...

The faq mentions inerrupting and resuming the install process.
The handbook should be cluttered with this kind of info.
