Do you have ipv6-support in the kernel? Considering you have USE=ipv6 and Xorg fails to create an ipv6 socket. Please paste the contents of your ~/.xinitrc file Have you specified in that file what window manager to use? And as first comment mentioned, do you have ipv6 compiled in to the kernel? If not or if it doesn't matter you may just want to emerge xorg without ipv6 support. USE="-ipv6" emerge x11-base/xorg-x11 --- Woody2143 does it work with the nv driver instead of nvidia? does it work if you only try to use one card at a time? After some tests... it works when I use "nv" instead of "nvidia". I will go to sleep now and re-emerge xorg tomorrow morning (in about 8 hrs) without ipv6 support; then try "nvdia" again. It seems to me that this is a serious nvidia bug...we'll see what happens tomorrow. Well, I'm just having the same problems... X does not want to start... and I don't know why... I tried with different versions of nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx (66629 to 7174) but no success: I get a blank screen instead of the nvidia-logo. I tried another version of xorg-x11 (current version is 6.8.2-r1) but no success either. Can you try to set the horizontal sync rate and then trying? OK, just found out something new: I played around with xorg.conf (setting h-sync and v-sync) but that didn't bring back xorg. As I mentionend in comment #5 the message "initialising glx module" is the last line in the xorg-log. So I tried commenting out the "Load glx" line in xorg.conf. Success!!!! xorg starts, it brings up the nvidia screen and it's running fine. But why the heck do I have to turn off the glx module?????? What's going on here????? Do I need this module?????? I emerged strace and I did the following to trace:
make sure that in xorg.conf "Load glx" is NOT commented out
make sure that xorg uses the nvidia drivers
Then I used the commands:
opengl-update nvidia
strace -f -F -o xorg_nvidia_glx.trace startx
for tracing.
I splitted the file into two parts, because the size was too big for submitting
one file. I hope I did right and the two files are not too big.
I used nvidia-drivers-7174 for that.
Craig: I read in your bug-report, that you get a blank screen and
CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE does not do anything.
Do you get a console when you press CTRL-ALT-F1?
Pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE doesn't help for me, but pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 gives

No, I do not get a console! But that does not have to mean anything - even back when X worked, I did not get a console when pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 or when I exited X. OK, I just searched in bugzilla for xorg & nvidia problems. I found 2 "identical" (?) problems. Bug 63894 is for AMD, but it says, that the flag "dlloader" should not be applied with the nvidia binaries: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=63894#c30 Maybe I should try to compile xorg with USE="-dlloader"???? But that has to wait until tomorrow... The other one isn't that close related to our bug i think: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80243#c9 There it says that downgrading the glibc solved the problem. There are enough other bugs in which problems with nvidia and xorg were reported. But most of them were solved by a new release of the nvidia-drivers. Played around with the dlloader USE flag, but that didn't solve the problem. I tried 'USE="+dlloader"' and 'USE="-dlloader"' but xorg still refuses to start when using the nvidia-driver. Ok, just jumped here from bug 90047... there a problem with xorg, nvidia and glx is reported. THAT sounds very familiar, doesn't it? The reporter of this bug explained, that the new glibc-2.3.5 could be the reason for the xorg-nvidia-glx problems. I'll try to downgrade glibc (and hopefully I do not shoot my system to hell) and I'll report what happened! I have exactly the same problem after the emerge of glibc 2.3.5 today and compiling a new module, seems glibc breaks either the driver or the glx extension. With the nv driver or opengl-update xorg-x11 everything works fine, yet no reasonable 3d acceleration. Reverted to the old glibc ebuild and everything works as usual. Severe problem, did no one of the testing crew for the masked glibc had a nv card? Just finished DOWNgrading from glibc-2.3.5 to glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1 (and my system did NOT went into hell ;-) ), xorg, nvidia and glx work again! I even did not had to recompile xorg. So glibc-2.3.5 IS the reason for all those troubles with nvidia-glx. Now one can see the 3 problems of being a Gentoo-User: long uptimes, "/etc/portage/package.unmask" and the daily "emerge -uD world" ;-). I unmasked glibc-2.3.5 in /etc/portage/package.unmask when it appeared in /usr/portage/profiles/packages.mask. That was last week I think. Since then, I did no reboot, and I updated a lot of packages (in order to keep my system up-to-date). After a reboot few days ago, I noticed, that xorg doesn't start. But I'd never imagined, that the updated glibc caused the problem. My suggestions to this bug: As a quick solution I would suggest to mask glibc-2.3.5 (if possible) change title to "xorg does not start with nvidia binary drivers and glibc-2.3.5" for example Is bug 90047 as a duplicate of this bug?? Craig: as I can see in your emerge --info you're running with glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1. I don't have any idea, why YOU are having the problem with the nvidia-drivers. Maybe you could try re-emerging glibc?? Considering this bug was started by Craig, who is not using Glibc 2.3.5, we can't really rename this bug to make it specific to 2.3.5 :P Juergen, I suggest you start another bug with that purpose, as these seem to be unrelated issues for the time being. But it describes that there are differences between the gentoo-installer and the ORIGINAL installer of the nvidia-drivers. Maybe you can try using the original nvidia installer? Using the ORIGINAL nvidia-installer gives me a working system. I have a similar problem... With opengl-update nvidia, when I try to start X with Load "glx", it don't work, and all applications linked with libGL.so are segfaulting. With opengl-update xorg-x11, The X server start and applications linked with libGL.so are working... Bug 90047 was very similar to my problem, but emerging glibc-2.3.4.20050125-r1 don't solve the problem for me, emerging the latest version of nvidia-glx ( 1.0.7174-r4) don't work either. I tried to install with the nvidia ".run" file : same problem. What kernel version do you use, and are /dev/zero set up correctly (character-device, major 1, minor 5). Could somebody with this problem provide the last 30-40 lines from strace of the crashing X-server? I moved to the stable tree on that system. But it still won't work with nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel from portage and it also won't work with the original nvidia installer. When I am home from work, I will post additional info here and also the strace output! I didn't do more since my last comment, but it works now... So don't forget to reboot after every glibc update ! I'm using stabel nvidia-glx 1.0.6629-r6 and nvidia-kernel 1.0.6629-r4 versions, but when X starts (xorg-x11 6.8.2-r4), the typical screen goes blank and then a green one appears and my PC freezes completely (ssh, ping, etc), so I have to hard reset it. If I use 'nv' driver, it takes longer to freeze (about 15 min) and there's no green screen (it flashes once and then it freezes). Created attachment 71901 [details]
