Trying trying to play a .kar file, kmid hangs the system and a reboot is needed. Opening the file with kmid allow to read the words, but when selecting "play" the pc is locked Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. launch kmid 2. load a .kar file 3. hit "play" Actual Results: system hang Expected Results: play the music tested with differnet files that used to work on a win$$ pc KDE version 3.3.2

Does it hang completely? Can you use the mouse/keyboard, switch terminal with Ctrl+Alt+Fn?

It is totally locked. not even responsive by ssh !

There's a problem at kernel level then... please post your 'emerge info', and try to see if you can gather some information by trying different version of alsa drivers (if you use alsa), different kernel versions, and so on...
