Currently there are different profiles, systemd, desktop/*, hardened, clang, etcetera and a little subset of no-multilib/* set.

But since the former group is largers it might be a good idea to turn somehow no-multilib as an option rather than a profile, so this way, for example profile default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome can be used like default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome+no-multilib.

I don't think it is worth to clone all the existing profiles to turn them no-multilib flavored and not sure if this idea is easy or hard to implement/maintain, but I think it is worth to be thought.

What would an "option" be (what mechanism)?
