Discovered on: amd64 (internal ref: ci)

configure.ac contains these checks:

  GTK_DATADIR=`$pkg_config --variable=prefix gtk+-2.0`
  PO_DATADIR=`$pkg_config --variable=prefix gtk+-2.0`

which will fail if /usr/lib*/pkgconfig/gtk+-2.0.pc is not installed on the system.

Presumably this should be reported upstream?

Yes, this is the first version that uses GTK3 and upstream maybe forgot to change the configure script. 

I will write upstream a mail.
