so we have a /usr/share/themes/Gentoo/gtk/gtkrc ... 
i'm thinking we should have /usr/share/themes/Gentoo/xine/xitkrc ... and we 
should cover all themes as we possibly can :) 
 
and anything else along these lines ... a sweet KDE theme would be nice, with a  
phatty Gentoo background ... 
  
and we should have them set as the defaults on systems ... after all, the 
people who know how to change the themes do, and the ones that dont know how to   
change the theme just sit in misery thinking 'god these widgets/colors are 
ugly' ;)

here here spanky, well said.  

one of the biggest problems i have with gentoo is that after i go through the 
multi-day compile and get a working system, i go into x and it looks like 
crap.  the default kde theme, harsh, the default gnome theme....i don't know 
what they were thinking....

while i'm not saying we make redhat-artwork the default for everything, i 
think a savvy gentoo theme would be nice, not just the defaults...

Since I've got the two dependencies on this bug I'll take it as well.

I've got a colour scheme for KDE that doesn't look too bad with the Keramik style.

I'll see what I can do for Gnome (no promises though)

May I point out a few things about theming?
1)  Flashy phat gentoo backgrounds is not necessarily a good thing. In many setups a user does not change the default background, and this means there has to be throught going into the default desktop for usability (it shall not intrude)

2) Usability.  i know there are a lot of people out here who like flashy themes, preferrably with flying pigs to bring the documentation. *cough*  But, there is seldom thoughts about usability for such themes. This includes size of buttons, contrast and visibilty, and making sure clickable areas are visible as such, and there are no "grey" areas (as in, clickable outside an edge where there is no visible clue.

I don't mind the idea of providing optional Gentoo specific themes, but I don't think they should be used as the defaults.  I think default themes should be left as is from the upstream developers.  I don't like little red hats on my desktop and I certainly don't want Larry the cow on there either :)  Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
