Bug 87180 – ksplash 3.4.0 soft-locks system using nvidia binary drivers

when I start kde 3.4.0, ksplash hangs displaying only the "starting interprocess communication" status message when I run as my user, or nothing when I run as root. No splash image in either case. The problem does not occur with ksplashsimple. By editing startkde to use ksplashsimple or no splash app at all, KDE starts flawlessly. While hung, the system will respond only to external ssh sessions. No local keyboard input.

Display the splash screen and the progress indicator flashing through the KDE

I can confirm this behaviour. Switching back to the stable nvidia-drivers solves it for me...

So this is probably an X server problem, reassigning.

Do you have specific nvidia options enabled in xorg.conf?
Frixos, can you confirm that it only happens with the newest nvidia drivers?

Also, are you both AMD64?

It happens with nvidia-6629, nvidia-7167, nvidia-7174. Can't test it with nvidia-6111, 'cause it won't compile the module. (Probably an issue with my kernel sources there.)

I am on i386, optimized to death for athlon-xp (-march)

I have the same problem! It happens on my Celeron 2.4 (PIV) box.

Upgraded to nvidia-7174, but the problem remains.

Then I changed the Option "RenderAccel" from "True" to "False" in xorg.conf, and KDE starts normal and works - does not hang on startup.

I hava that problem ,I solved that by changed the ksplash theme.
It only hangs when use the defauls ksplash theme .

Can you reproduce this with the 'nv' driver? Please reopen when you reply.

With the 'nv' as driver in xorg.conf everything works without any problems. 
 
Btw I cannot reopen this bug...

I can confirm this problem on my Amd64 Laptop, also that the tip from Jay does 
wonder. I never get anything above as the current stable (6629) packages 
running. After changing the Ksplash theme the latest 7664 drivers are working 
well sofar.

closing as it's reported fixed in newer driver versions.  Please reopen if you still have problems.  Also, if you are using a laptop, you may need to uncomment the appropriate line in /etc/modules.d/nvidia
