I have an ABIT AV8 motherboard with integrated VIA Velocity network controller.  I just installed 2005.0 stage 3 with all the regular defaults from the manual, except that I wanted to be lazy and use genkernel.  I discovered that genkernel does not properly set the via_velocity module to "m" in the default config.  Changing the /etc/kernels/kernel-2.6.9-r14.config file and setting it to "m" fixed the problem for me, but you might want to fix this in next release of genkernel just in case.

Go for it...

You might want to take the defaults we used for 2005.0, rather than adding each item one at a time.

This was a module in 2.6.11-r6 but now it isn't in 2.6.11-r7.

It is definitely in the config that is now in CVS and will be in genkernel 3.2.0
when it is released
