Which soundcard are you using? Internal PCI or External USB? I using creative audigy2 internal pci soundcard. PS: xmms-1.2.10-r5 work fine I'm now seeing segfaults with xmms (see also bug 82051), beep media player (see bug 86066) and Gnome Volume Control. Note that gstreamer based media players are still working fine, so far. The chronology: 1. Missed meeting with Master's supervisor because beep-alarm plugin was failing (would play for about a quarter second then stop). 2. Tried recompiling beep and all plugins. Beep now crashed immediately on playing. 3. Got the hunch this may be due to the new version of GCC 3.4.3...tried emerge -e system. 4. Beep now crashed whenever I tried to play anything. Doh. 5. Gnome Volume Control 2.10 will also now crash any time it is started. 6. Tried recompiling all ALSA packages. No change. 7. Installed XMMS. If started from Gnome....Run Application it segfaults as soon as I move it around the screen. If started from a gnome terminal I can play one file, but if I try to add a whole directory it segfaults partway. 8. Tried recompiling kernel, rebooted, no change. The strace of beep (see bug 86066) seems to point at USBDEVFS for no apparent reason. I'm using a PCI emu10k1. My instinct is this has something to do with the new GCC, as mentioned. Other possibilities - files being on a Windows partition, gamin rather than fam? Well, as I was writing this now XMMS seems to want to work when launced from the terminal, but still crashes when launched from the menu. Thanks for the link Jeremy, I emerged strace and you won't believe my surprise when it kept rolling and rolling out code on the stderr (segfaulting of xmms last night was happening with milliseconds!) only for xmms to eventually launch without any error! This bug is fixed for me with latest stable packages. I can confirm this bug. I rebooted once and that was all she wrote for XMMS. In an attempt to eliminate the problem child, I unmerged all XMMS things and re-emerged with only basic USE flags set. That fixed it. Here's what was set via /etc/make.conf use flags etc: Here's my new emerge that works: USE="-mad -mikmod -esd -oss" emerge xmms [ebuild R ] media-sound/xmms-1.2.10-r15 -3dnow +alsa +arts -directfb +esd* -flac -jack -lirc +mad* +mikmod* +mmx +mp3 +nls* +oss* -sndfile +vorbis 0 kB Here's a list of ebuilds that I DO NOT have installed now that I did when it broke: [ebuild N ] media-plugins/xmms-mikmod-1.2.10 0 kB [ebuild N ] media-plugins/xmms-esd-1.2.10-r1 +oss 0 kB [ebuild N ] media-plugins/xmms-mad-0.8 0 kB It is a nasty bug too, at least on my system, as it segfaults into the background. It leaves a X window up. It does not respond to: # killall xmms # kill (#) The only thing you can do to get it to go away is... # ps -A (find XMMS, there was 3 for me, I selected the uppermost) # kill -9 (#) I wish I could be of more assistance technically, but I have narrowed this bug down as far as I can w/o trying to emerge one use-flag change at a time. If that's of use to anybody -- let me know and I'll try that to see if I can zero in on a particular aspect causing it. FWIW, my soundcard is a Cirrus (snd_cs46xx) in an IBM Thinkpad T21. I have not the slightest idea how it's connected, but I'd venture a guess at it's integrated into the motherboard. I took out the hard drive which rests RIGHT ABOVE the sound card outputs... and as far as I could see it appeared to be board. So my guess is integrated. Oh good God, is xmms even working for anyone? Can I downgrade to at least get it working again? On my system xmms-xmmsmplayer causes xmms to segfault. Disabling this plugin causes the segfaults to go away. Now works well with alsa.
