Sorry if this report has been recieved, then please disregard this one, as I
have been having problems with Bugzilla.

Two times I have installed Gentoo 1.4_rc1, and when I made my partitions
for Ext3 it would complete the making of it, then say Ext2 made NOT Ext3
this is the command I ran;

mke2fs -j /dev/hdax  (x = the number I would use)

Also I used the 'Vanilla-Sources' kernel, and compiled in ext3 support NOT as a
module, and when the kernel boots, at the top of the screen it says
'Gentoo Booting' and where it's listing the file system it's saying ext2, but
later down the kernel messages it's showing that it's loading it as ext3, and
'mount' shows my root partition as ext3.

could you attach the output of `dmesg` right after booting

uhh... ext2 and ext3 are the same filessytem, just one has a journal...
therefore you kinda need to mount -t ext3 any ext3 partition... if you are using
any kernel prior to 2.4.20-preX I forget which version... but recently a bit got
merged to check for journal first so that mount without -t works right.
