kmplayer keep aspect ratio option is not always working. You need to go to fullscreen and then go back to get proper aspect ratio. Another way is to check and uncheck that option again.

which version do we speak about?

It is 0.8.4a, but i remember 0.8.4 and it was the same.

This is probably not Gentoo-specific.
