Is there a reason you believe it's optional? Firefox do not need this notification daemon - why Webkit "need" it? Webkit is for rendering of HTML/CSS/JS, notifications is an additional feature. That doesn't mean that it's actually optional in the build system or the code. We can only make it optional in Gentoo if it's: 1. easy to patch out; or 2. an option in the build system already. We're not magicians. Can you provide such a patch? Have no time for this :( But I am sure that this is not very difficult.
