Bug 842219 – kde plasma update: mouse sensitivity forgotten on replugging mouse

I'm not sure exactly which package to log this against, so bear with me. Also, this probably doesn't (immediately) affect people with wired mice or a wireless mouse with really good battery, but I have an Aerox 3 Wireless, which is charged by unplugging the receiver and plugging in the mouse on the same cord, and only gets around 70 hours on a charge, so this cycle happens at least weekly.

The mouse is picked up as a new device when doing this (or the reverse), so when I do, the sensitivity setting for the mouse is forgotten. I can work around by either logging out and back in again or by opening the mouse settings in the system settings app and, for example, toggling the setting "press left and right buttons for middle-click", and hitting "Apply". Of course, I have to toggle it back again (:

This is a new behavior - previously, I could plug my mouse in any time to charge - the set sensitivity wasn't lost. I saw a bunch of kde packages updated in the last day or two, so I'm assuming it's one of them that's responsible.

It is sad to read that you have these strange problems with the mouse. The situation seems to be a bit more complicate and requires some analysis.
We can not help you efficiently via bug tracker. The bug tracker aims rather on specific problems in .ebuilds and less on individual systems. From what we know so far it could be anything.

I have had very good experience on the gentoo IRC [1] with questions like this. Of course there are also forums and mailing lists [2,3].
I hope you understand, that I will close the bug here therefore and wish you good luck on one of the mentioned channels [4].
Please reopen the ticket in order to provide an indication for an specific error in an ebuild or any gentoo related product.

I've tested by adding a new mouse to the system - and the same behavior happens: where, in the past, a new device added to the system would adopt the existing settings, now, a new device is given default settings - sensitivity way too high and acceleration. So this is quite easy to test: simply plug in a mouse which hasn't been seen on the system before. Re-plugging the same mouse makes it come back with the settings that were set.

This probably is a once-off annoyance for most people, however it appears that the SteelSeries Aerox Wireless 3 is viewed as a new device every time it is reconnected (so, whenever the base station is unplugged such that the cable to it can be used to power the mouse and retain it as a pointing device)

I understand that this tracker is more focused on the ebuilds than the software itself, so I'd really appreciate any directions as to where to escalate this. This behavior was not present before the updates that prompted reporting this bug.

Addendum: to put it in perspective, for a mouse like the Aerox, which has approximately 60-80 hours of use on the battery, this means I have to fiddle with mouse settings about every 3 days, which is quite annoying, and I have to do so with keyboard navigation because the default settings make the mouse so sensitive it's very difficult to use.

fwiw just stabilised kde-plasma/plasma-desktop-5.24.6-r2 (bug 864253) contained a relevant fix.

Thanks - that appears to be the version that's installed right now. That bug mentions fixed in systemsettings 5.24.7, so I'll wait for that to drop. I added my 2c upstream too (:

The fix is backported in 5.24.6-r2. There is nothing in 5.24.7 (to be released some time in Oct./Nov.) on top of that, so if it is not fixed for you now, it won't be with 5.24.7 either.

There will be no further 5.24.x release in Gentoo, our next stable is going to be 5.25.5.
