I was facing the same issue. I think the geary ebuild has the vala dependencies a bit messed up - they were correct when the ebuild was generated (VALA_MIN_API_VERSION="0.48") but the version is not capped at the top, and the introduction of vala 0.56 broke the geary build. I was able to build geary with vala-0.50.10 by just running emerge -C =dev-lang/vala-0.56.0 and them rebuilding geary. I did not go any further but I think that introducing a VALA_MAX_API_VERSION="0.50" to the ebuild would solve this problem. Can anyone verify this? I was able to build using dev-lang/vala-0.52.10 as well. Your workaround seems to work.
