When portage tries to download a file from mirrors.evowise.com you get a html file, not the file requested.

For example the layout file:

$ ls -l .layout.conf.*
-rw-rw-r--    1 portage  portage         45 Nov  5  2019 .layout.conf.mirror.bytemark.co.uk
-rw-rw-r--    1 portage  portage     614406 Sep 20 10:56 .layout.conf.mirrors.evowise.com
-rw-rw-r--    1 portage  portage         45 Nov  5  2019 .layout.conf.www.mirrorservice.org

$ head -c 32 .layout.conf.mirrors.evowise.com
<!DOCTYPE html><html lang="en"><

Looks like mirrors.evowise.com is no longer a mirror site.

Sorry for wasting your time - should have checked the master list of mirrors before reporting.
