when libz.so.1.2.2 is installed it fails to remove the older libz.so.1.2.1
thus leaving a stale libz. laying arround 

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:

rm -rf libz.so.1.2.1; ldconfig is the work arround for now however this 
should get fixed because it is not nice to have old versions of libs hanging
arrouund.... certainly not on a newly built system.

Shouldn't happen, unless you touch installed files, which you're hereby advised not to do. (Bug 71265)

What's the output of `emerge -Cp zlib`? Also provide `emerge --info` please.
