new version of alsa-libs (as of now) tries to patch the source, but doesn't
download the diff

Was it for _rc3 version of ALSA?

Certainly was, but the diff has now appeared. 
I probably caught the new version too quickly :)

Well, the real problem was that the _rc3 ebuilds got unmasked by mistake by
another dev.  They are masked again now.
