Bug 793821

Summary: x11-apps/xauth Slowing down the start of "X" + error accessing ".Xauthority" due to the coincidence of the file name with the hostname in the domain!

Description Stas 2021-06-02 06:52:27 UTC
The following behavior is observed:
Creating a link, directory, or file that matches the name of a host that is in the top-level domain causes "X" to start slowing down and fail to access ".Xauthority" ...
For example:
Hostname Dddd
"/etc/hosts":
127.0.0.1 hostname
192.168.1.33 Dddd.domainname Dddd dddd
...

Hostname in the domain: Dddd.domainname
If you create: file, directory, link ... with the name "Dddd"...
The specified error occurs and the start "X" is slowed down!
It also gives an error of some library, but now I can not specify exactly which one (I am writing from memory).
If you use a domain name of a different level, for example:
"Dddd.domainname.org"
This error does not occur!
Also, this error does not occur if the host is not included in the domain!
If you change the hostname in the "hostname" file and restart the computer, "X" starts up a little faster, but with an additional error.
Checked this bug in Debian, it also exists there. But the version is different: xauth-1.0.1
Comment 1 Stas 2021-06-02 06:58:02 UTC
This error occurs not only for the user but also for "root".
Comment 2 Jonas Stein gentoo-dev 2021-06-03 12:51:24 UTC
Sounds to me as it should be reported and fixed upstream.
Which version did you try?

We need to have all information at hand before ticket assignment. Please provide
* the complete build.log as attachment and
* paste the emerge info
as described on https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Attach_the_logs_to_the_bug_ticket

"It also gives an error of some library, but now I can not specify exactly which one (I am writing from memory)."

We (or upstream) really need a complete report with logs and the exact messages.

Please reopen this ticket (Status:UNCONFIRMED) afterwards.
Comment 3 Stas 2021-06-03 21:11:46 UTC
OK .... I restored it from a restore point and tomorrow I will try again to install "X" and other packages - I'll see what happens.
It's just that there was also a bug in Debian, which is why I reported ...
If on Gentoo it could be due to a compilation error, then on Debian it shouldn't be ...

Attached error sequence files (console)

I am attaching files with the contents of the command sequence and the contents of the directory.
This is a fresh install of the system - installed last week.
True, and this time it does not give a library error! I recently reported this error, but my post has been deleted! There was a bug in the library in thet message!
Comment 7 Piotr Karbowski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2021-06-08 19:33:52 UTC
Can you reproduce it if you start X not as root, but as regular unprivileged user?

Would be good to narrow it down of how xauth is executed when it goes bad, you can try to catch it out of /proc/ or even use sysdig and run in another tty 'sysdig -c spy_users'.

Once you are able to reproduce the xauth locking failure, we can debug it more.
