Description Bjarke Istrup Pedersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-22 10:48:56 UTC
It would be nice if there was an ebuild for the 1.9 version of syslog-ng, the newest version in portage right now is 1.6.5 .

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
Comment 1 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-22 12:09:12 UTC
1.9 is the development branch of syslog-ng. Because syslog-ng is such a critical system component, and the 1.9 branch is not recommended for production use by upstream I'm not interested in adding support for it in portage. Feel free to either create and use an ebuild in your local overlay or take your request for support to breakmygentoo. Thanks.

Comment 3 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-03 00:54:22 UTC
Can you give me a pointer to the place where upstream explicitly does NOT recommend 1.9 for production? I couldn't find something like that.

http://www.balabit.com/products/syslog_ng/upgrades.bbq says:

--8<--
Current development (version 1.9.x).

This will once become syslog-ng 2.0, it is currently meant for BETA testing.
--8<--

Isn't beta testing something suitable for a Portage package?
There are *so many* other beta ebuilds in Portage.
Comment 4 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-03 07:44:57 UTC
Not usually ones that are so system-critical and not ones that I maintain. I'm generally opposed to having non-release quality software in portage (where release quality means that upstream expects users to be running it). If people are interested in trying the new syslog-ng, they're welcome to try it in their local overlays or from breakmygentoo.
Comment 5 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-03 10:31:45 UTC
What about package.mask?!
Comment 6 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-03-03 11:05:15 UTC
that's not what package.mask is for. You're welcome to use the two options I mentioned already.
Comment 7 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-19 05:17:50 UTC
CMIIW, but doesn't syslog-ng 1.6 lack IPv6 support?
For me, IPv6 support is crucial.

I hereby offer to maintain and take care of the 1.9 versions, if we'd add it to the tree.

Should I try to get a statement vom Balazs Scheidler, clarifying his current assessment of 1.9?
Comment 8 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-19 05:39:02 UTC
I strongly believe that putting that new version into portage will be a huge benefit for all current users of 1.9 and for all who would like to use/test it without having to mess with overlays.

I am also offering my workforce to avoid almost any workwise impact on your person.
Comment 9 Georg Weiss 2006-06-19 06:11:16 UTC
Please consider adding 1.9 to the tree. It has several great features. I'm using the 1.9 release on several servers and it seems to be stable.
Comment 10 Klaus Schleicher 2006-06-19 06:19:48 UTC
Hi,
I installed the 1.9 version of syslog-ng on several machines because I badly need the new features.Until now I haven't had any problems neither on my x86 nor on my amd64 systems. So it would be a big advantage if I could get the new version direct out of the portage tree.

Thanks in advance

Comment 11 Matthias Wolf 2006-06-19 06:54:19 UTC
I have tried version 1.9 with the local overlay on several machines and arch's, there is no problem so far. I am wondering why it's not in the portage tree.
I love the new template support und as Mr. Schlich said the IPv6 support.

So it would be nice if everyone could relish the new features without using the local overlay.
Comment 12 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-19 07:06:21 UTC
Even Debian has 1.9 in testing and unstable:

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=syslog-ng&searchon=names&version=all&release=all
Comment 13 Juergen Landsmann 2006-06-19 07:10:25 UTC
Precisely because v1.6 is marked as "dead-ended" by the programmer himself it's *now* time to insert the newer package into portage (why not hard-masked?)!

Each user should be enabled to decide what version is to be installed by simply using a hard-masked package.

Wouldn't it rather be better to enhance administration by making it possible to easily use a new, supported piece of software with a bunch of new features than populating an outdated one?

IMHO creating an overlay is a laborious way to install packages - and it's not guaranteed, that these overlays still work after the next world-update!
Comment 14 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-21 18:26:18 UTC
My overlay now has 2.0rc1+20060621:

Comment 15 Bjarke Istrup Pedersen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-27 23:09:07 UTC
Reopening bug for 2 reasons:
1: 1.6 is dead-end
2: Several people (including myself) is asking for 2.0rc gets added to the tree.

Have a look at the ebuild from http://overlays.gentoo.org/dev/wschlich/browser/stable/app-admin/syslog-ng and test please :)
Comment 16 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-27 23:28:15 UTC
Please don't change the status of bugs that aren't assigned to you and have clearly stated reasons for their state from the package maintainer. The 1.6 version is still the upstream-recommended version for production environments.

The overlay mentioned is, I'm sure, a fine place for people to try out the 1.9 series. 2.0 will be added to portage as soon as it's released and is recommended for production enviroments. I monitor the situation closely.

Thanks.
Comment 17 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-07 12:11:21 UTC
http://www.balabit.com/products/syslog_ng/upgrades.bbq#branch20

"2006.07.08	syslog-ng v2.0 2.0rc1 Current production"
"2006.05.23	syslog-ng v1.9 1.9.11 Archived branch"
"Current stable (version 2.0.x)."

So?

Release early, release often... But let's not debate this, eh?
Comment 20 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-03 07:23:09 UTC
Balazs released it only for you, Mr. Bones ;-))
Comment 21 Wolfram Schlich (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-03 07:24:01 UTC
And well, my overlay has 2.0.0, for those who cannot wait ;)
