The program 'dvips', available in package tetex and perhaps others, will send its output to lpr by default. This is stupid.

It is fixed by commenting out
o |lpr
in /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/config.ps

Reproducible: Always

May I request sending this to the developewrs upstream?

Unless you disagree with me. In that case close this bug as INVALID or WONTFIX

Sorry for the delay. As for sending PostScript output to lpr,
I applied a patch to a2ps (app-text/a2ps) to send its output
to stdout (the patch was requested by some users) instead
of sending it to lpr (default), but there are several users
complaining it's not good to changed the default behaviour,
so I added "vanilla" USE flag to disable the patch.
I cannot say which is better (not change the default, change
the default, or let users choose via USE flag), any idea?

This bug report is pretty old, and I think it should be closed with WONTFIX, as sending output to the printer is an upstream 'feature' and people are used to. I don't think that is Gentoo's purpose to fix bad upstream decisions.

As said above, if you want the defaults changed, that's what upstream is for, not Gentoo bugzilla.
