Ok, here goes:
| # equery belongs /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6
| [ Searching for file(s) /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6 in *... ]
| sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6 (/usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6)

Bit verbose, so lets try -q:
| # equery -q belongs /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6
| [ Searching for file(s) /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6 in *... ]
| sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6 (/usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6)

No change.  Let's see what happens when we filter it with "cat":
| # equery -q belongs /usr/src/linux-2.6.10-gentoo-r6 | cat
| sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r6

That's more like it!

The bug is that "-q" appears to be ignored if the output is to a tty.
