Seems fine with VALA_MAX_API_VERSION="0.50"

Downgrading vala to 0.50.7 and using VALA_MAX_API_VERSION="0.50" emerge caribou does in fact make it install in ~amd64, using vala 0.53 fails with the original error. Not a great fix but better than nothing while waiting for a version that compiles with newer vala.

Can confirm that VALA_MAX_API_VERSION="0.50" works around this issue for me.
