I can confirm that Firefox (net-www/mozilla-firefox-1.0.1 atm) builds and seemingly works fine with Freetype 2.1.9. I used the same technique as the reporter, copying the ebuild for freetype-2.1.9 to my overlay and removing the rdepend block containing Firefox. I'm not sure this bug is assigned to the correct team. Since the problem is within the freetype-2.1.9 ebuild, shouldn't it be assigned to the team in charge of that? FF is no longer using freetype, but pango/xft instead. Anyway, the block is no longer there for current versions in portage:
freetype-2.1.10.ebuild
<snip>
RDEPEND="${DEPEND}
!<www-client/mozilla-1.7.3-r3
!<www-client/mozilla-firefox-1.0-r3
!<mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird-0.9-r3
!<media-libs/libwmf-0.2.8.2"
</snip>
Closing an obsolete bug.
