I first discovered, that my runlevel 5 does nothing - no GUI, altough /etc/rc.conf is configured to use kdm and kde-3.3.2 my 2nd try was: /etc/X11/startDM.sh Again just nothing. Then I tried: startx - works like expected. So the startDM.sh must be wrong !! Checked to file and found out, that: if [ -e ${svcdir}/options/xdm/service ] translates to /var/lib/init.d/options/xdm/service which does NOT exist. So the Xorg ebuild didn't install all files and directories. This was a 2004.3 stage2 install, then a portage update around end of december 2004 and then a emerge xorg kde. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. telinit 5 2. /etc/X11/startDM.sh 3. Actual Results: No runlevel 5 with X. Expected Results: Being able to directly start (the gentoo way) into X instead of doing it manually!
