Apache-Tomcat mod_jk2 aka JK2

15 November - JK2 is officially unsupported

JK2 has been put in maintainer mode and no further development will take place. The reason for shutting down JK2 development was the lack of developers interest. Other reason was lack of users interest in adopting JK2, caused by configuration complexity when compared to JK.

The latest official JK2 release is 2.0.4.

JK2 will have it's successor within core Apache2.1/2.2 distribution. We have developed new proxy_ajp that is an addition to the mod_proxy and uses Tomcat's AJP protocol stack. It is developped in httpd-2.1 and integrated in it. We have also developed a new proxy_balancer module for load balancing http and ajp protocol stacks.
</QUOTE>

That means
- mod_jk with Apache <2.1
- proxy_ajp with Apache >=2.1 (which would be a offical Apache module)

Therefore, in my opinion, mod_jk2 should be masked. mod_jk 1.2.8 (Bug 19094) , which includes the backported mod_jk2 functionality, should be added to portage .

I agree.
Comment 2 Christian Parpart (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-01-22 00:08:40 UTC
when this is "officially" unsupported by apache, is there any need for this package anyway?

If not, it would make *NO* sense in porting it to the new apache-module eclass.

reassigning to /me cause i'll start maintaining tomcat. i'll work on the mod_jk as far as i've got tomcat itself cleaned up and working. i think i'll focus on the 5.5x release first and afterwards i'll work on the 5.0.x release. i'm not sure about the 4.0 version yet.

So is mod_jk2 abandoned? Should I switch back to mod_jk? I have an ebuild for GroupWise WebAccess and I need to update it to work with something. Can someone give me some official advice?
Comment 5 Jan Brinkmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-02-10 05:59:20 UTC
yep. mod_jk2 is deprecated, i'm not sure if we'll remove this version from the tree soon but a better solution would it be to use the mod_jk instead since that project is activly maintained and developed upstream.
Comment 6 Paul Querna 2005-03-12 00:20:43 UTC
Since mod_jk2 will not be used, removing the block on the apache package refresh.
Comment 7 Jan Brinkmann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-04-14 10:52:04 UTC
for everybody who still uses the mod_jk2 , i'm going to remove it from the tree on sunday evening. i'll add mod_jk either tonight or tomorrow, depends on various things. marking this one as fixed.
