You added --enable-xgetdefault to the -r11 ebuild.. when its set.. I can't manage to load the X resources from either ~/.Xdefaults or ~/.Xresources .. and I really dont know why...

Here is a quick workaround that works for me:

emerge =x11-terms/aterm-0.4.2-r9

yes, the difference between the -r9 and -r11 ebuild is the --enable-xgetdefault ...

Are you sure your ~/.Xresources is loaded properly? Are entries from that file listed in `xrdb -query`?

arg.. now it works.. I dont know what I changed.... probably my fault
