Setting the key map is described in the guide.
If it does not work, please file a specific bug about it.

No contradiction. It shows how to start sshd and mentions the network has to be set up, which is described in the following part.

Granted, that one is tricky. IMHO it talks about /etc/make.conf as it will be known throughout the Gentoo experience. The code sample does show how to edit it at that point. BTW, to path in the note was wrong. Fixed.

coldplug is not masked ~x86. It should be emerged as described.
