Bug 769899 – sci-mathematics/maxima is missing a dependency on sci-libs/vtk[python] (needs python-3.6?)

The graphics created by sci-mathematics/maxima-5.44.0 are plotted using sci-libs/vtk-8.1.0-r4, which in turn, needs python-3.6. But python-3.6 is not available in Gentoo, and vtk-8.1.0-r4 doesn't compile with python-3.7 or python-3.8.

Maxima depends on vtk to plot graphics with the maxima draw package: this should be fixed in maxima ebuild. Up to now I use vtk-8.1.0-r4 because it's the most up-to-date version that works with maxima. At the same time vtk-8.2.0, vtk-8.2.0-r1 (in Gentoo now) and vtk-9.0.1-r1 (not in Gentoo yet) compile fine, but give errors when ploting maxima-5.44.0 graphics.

In summary:
1) There is a conflict among versions of maxima, vtk and python.
2) Maxima's ebuild should include the dependency on vtk.

If maxima upstream does not support even VTK 8.2.x then here will not be a fast or easy solution to this bug, as neither py36 support nor VTK 8.1.0 can come back at this point.

    sci-mathematics/maxima: new USE-controlled dependency on sci-libs/vtk.
    
    VTK is an optional backend for plotting in Maxima that you can enable
    with "draw_renderer: 'vtk;". It is also NON-optional when drawing with
    the scene() command; however, scene() is presently broken after VTK
    dropped its Tcl/Tk interface. As a result, we add sci-libs/vtk only as
    an optional dependency to Maxima, behind USE=vtk.
    
    This requires dropping ~ppc for now.
