CUPS was acquired by Apple and the main developer worked there until recently. Now he has forked Apple CUPS into OpenPrinting CUPS:

https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups

The Apple CUPS repo has been inactive for quite some time: https://github.com/apple/cups.

Thoughts on a new package or just switching upstreams? The risk, of course, is that Apple's version becomes active again, but not sure how likely that is.
