Description ajay 2004-12-28 17:27:49 UTC
Gentoo Linux was successfully installed from CD(downloaded and burned x86-universal-2004.3-r1.iso)
Gentoo booted and i logged in as root.
next i wanted to run x-windows so as instructed on your documentation pages regarding installation (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml) of the x-window server i proceeded.

i typed 'emerge xorg-x11' and the process started.

During the 'emerge xorg-x11' many errors showed up. examples...
1. 'connecting to .....blahblah...... failed: no route to host'
sometimes message came up 'Retrying' , other times 'Giving up'
sometimes it showed 'connected' but then showed '403 Forbidden' or at times '404 Not found'

finally it aborted with the last line saying:
!!! Couldn't download fontconfig-2.2.3.tar.gz. Aborting

after this i just checked one thing, which is the internet connection.
i typed 'ping www.yahoo.com'
and after a couple of ping operations: i pressed ctrl-c to find 0% packet loss(2 transmitted packets and 2 received packets).

Which would indicate that my internet connection is working fine (which is also verified by this other working internet connection on a winXP machine connected to same router+modem, from which i am actually writing this message)

How do i proceed with this matter ?

I wish to install X-windows server and finally get x-windows working !

Thanks for your help.
