mail-client/sylpheed-claws-ghostscript-viewer has dependency on app-text/ghostscript and not virtual/ghostscript and therefore want app-text/ghostscript-afpl uninstalled. Is this necessary?

Hmm, somehow this bugs has evaded my attention till now. Did you check wether it
works with -afpl? I can't test it right now without setting up a completely new
test environment.
